New York–JFK – American's secondary transatlantic hub and its primary Latin American hub in the Northeast. Once American started emphasizing the hub again in their first attempt to reestablish their hub here, they added many new domestic routes to the JFK hub. In April 2021, American made a major expansion at the LGA and JFK hubs due to a partnership with JetBlue. Because of the partnership, it allowed American to utilize all regional flights with regional jets that included a First Class Cabin at both the New York hubs, and add new year-round and seasonal service to destinations all over. The partnership allowed American to add at least a dozen new international routes, thus reestablishing JFK as a major international and domestic hub. The partnership allowed for their hub at JFK to complement its PHL hub, and make the airport a major connecting hub for both American and JetBlue.
Despite this expansion, Delta still remains the biggest carrier at John F. Kennedy International Airport by destinations and number of passengers carried. American has about 12% of the market share at JFK, making it the third largest carrier at the airport behind Delta and JetBlue. With American Airlines canceling nearly 1,000 flights since Sunday, it left thousands of frustrated customers at DFW International Airport scrambling for hotels rooms as they waited longingly to make their final connections.
And even when skies had cleared Monday and Tuesday, delays and cancellations piled up because American didn't have enough planes, pilots and flight attendants in the right places to fly weary passengers. Many of those passengers were asking why they had to pay for hotel rooms, meals and taxis when planes were delayed because of a lack of pilots and flight attendants. Customers on Spirit Airlines ran into similar problems with weather over the weekend, similarly wrecking flight schedules for the next few days and forcing the carrier to cancel more than half of its flights on Tuesday.

Since 1981, as a means of creating revenue in a period of loss-making, American Airlines had offered a lifetime pass of unlimited travel, for the initial cost of $250,000. However, after some time, the airline realised they were making losses on the tickets, with the ticketholders costing them up to $1 million each. Ticketholders were booking large amounts of flights, and some ticketholders flying interstate for lunch or flying to London multiple times a month. AA raised the cost of the lifetime pass to $3 million, and then finally stopped offering it in 2003. AA then used litigation to cancel two of the lifetime offers, saying the passes "had been terminated due to fraudulent activity".
